Working life as a brickie

1980 - 2020

Nathan worked as a bricklayer since the age of 19. He started as an apprentice and completed his City in Guilds. Nathan was an excellent brickie and took pride in his work. He was self employed and usually sub contracted in and around the local area.

Nathan hated working out in the cold and found winter months really difficult. He would take hours to warm up once home and always wanted the heating up full blast.

His white VW caddy could be heard arriving home with the sound of the bass from his reggae blasting out. There was always a Daily Mirror and bakery cake on his dusty car seat. I spend many years washing really dusty clothes and sometimes Nathan would come home with orange hair and skin covered in brick dust.

Nathan stopped working for Nathan Buckle in September 2020 and had spent most of the summer out of work due to Covid. Nathan enjoyed that rest, although I had other project ideas for the garden. We got some of it done.

He enjoyed the laughs and jokes he had a work with his work mates. Always complained when no tea or drinks were provided by tight customers. He always said the wealthy ones were the tightest!

We had planned to sell our home this year and for Nathan to party retire, hard manual work was tiring and he had suffered with a few aches and pains. He deserved a rest and to enjoy life at an easier pace.....sadly he didn't get his long awaited retirement.
